Ready For Her Close-Up: Cate Blanchett

The biggest delusion about 'barely there' or 'no make-up make-up' is, quite bizarrely, that it's a tricky task that involves a primer, a highlighter (and a matte powder to soften the highlighter) and a contouring bronzer. Great. But before you hang up your foundation brush in sheer frustration that it takes much longer to look like you're wearing less make-up than a full face of slap, bear one thing in mind; If you spend an extra couple of minutes on your skincare you'll be halfway there.

Cate Blanchett is the perfect example. I don't think she's got an enormous amount of make-up on - a little mascara, lipstick and brightening concealer - but it's because her skin is well-prepped that she looks so glowing. We all know that make-up on top of dry skin is a big no-no - regardless of how much make-up you pile on, it's only going to make matters worse. Hydrating B5 by SkinCueticals, full of moisture-boosting hyaluronic acid, is like a big drink of water for your face. Smooth on a few drops before moisturiser and it'll sort out any dry patches, giving you a better glow than any highlighter could.

If your skin is particularly dry, try a face oil for that instant radiance. Again, used under your moisturiser, it will give you that dewy-not-shiny complexion that looks so youthful. Estelle & Thild's Rose Otto Face Oil is top-notch. Once you've massaged in your skincare your face will look instantly brighter, hopefully cutting out some of the many steps you need for a deceptively minimal make-up look. Phew.
